Alexei Melnick's Tweakerville: Life and Death in Hawai'i's Ice World
This novel is riveting. People always argue about pidgin, but I find the language here very successful and the details finely observed. I know and care about these characters. Melnick won the Cades Award for Literature, Emerging Author prize and I think you'll get a good idea of the qualities he brought to this project through the interview. We recorded it on a busy Monday morning in the Pali Longs parking lot---we had the characters all around us.
